Discover the stars in the heart of Sicily

Nestled among the gentle hills of central Sicily, the Montedoro Astronomical Observatory is a unique place where science, landscape, and architecture blend into an extraordinary educational and sensory experience. Located on Monte Ottavio, west of the town of Montedoro, the observatory offers a 360-degree view of the Sicilian hinterland, embracing towns such as Sutera and Mussomeli.

G. Leopardi Astronomical Observatory

A project between sky and earth

The choice of this place is not accidental: its elevated position, breathtaking view, and absence of light pollution make it perfect for astronomical observation and scientific education.
The architecture of the building is designed to blend gently into the landscape, following the contours of the land and enhancing its beauty. A long prism clad in travertine stretches across the hill, while the copper dome—dedicated to observations—opens to the sky. The entrance, set into the earth, guides the visitor on a symbolic journey: from matter to the cosmos.

The largest telescope in Sicily

The beating heart of the observatory is the largest astronomical telescope in Sicily: a 600 mm diameter Newton-Cassegrain, capable of magnifications up to 300 times.
Equipped with an equatorial fork mount and synchronized dome, it allows precise tracking of celestial movements. Next to it, there is also a 150 mm SkyWatcher refractor, ideal for observing lunar details and planets.

Thanks to these advanced instruments, during astronomical evenings it is possible to observe stars, planets, galaxies, and fascinating celestial phenomena under the guidance of experts.

Planetarium: The sky, within reach

Inside the observatory there is also a modern digital Planetarium with 50 seats and a dome 7 meters in diameter. The projector is able to faithfully reproduce the night sky and the movements of celestial bodies at any historical moment, latitude, or weather condition.

Thanks to full dome technology and immersive projections, the planetarium is an extraordinary tool for learning astronomy in an engaging way, perfect for students, families, and enthusiasts of all ages.
