Caltanissetta Participatory Budget 2026: all 26 projects compared
The 2026 Participatory Budget of the Municipality of Caltanissetta makes available €37,100 and lets citizens decide how to spend it. 26 projects have been admitted to the vote, but only 7 will be funded, with a maximum cap of €5,300 each. Voting is open until 26 July 2026, online with SPID or CIE or in person. What is Participatory Budgeting
Participatory budgeting is a tool of direct democracy: the Municipality allocates a share of its budget to projects proposed by citizens, associations and third-sector bodies, and then citizens themselves choose, by voting, which ones to fund. In Caltanissetta, the 2026 edition was managed by Directorate IV – Accounting Office, which collected 28 proposals and admitted 26 after the eligibility check.
The proposals are divided into three thematic areas:

- Urban regeneration

Why we did this analysis
The official documents of the 26 projects are 202 pages.
It is really hard for a citizen to read them all, so the vote ends up rewarding the best-known name or whoever ran the noisiest campaign. We read all the proposals with the help of artificial intelligence and compared them by applying the same criteria to all, with the same structure and the same space for each one.

- How many people does it really reach, and who are they?
Some projects reach hundreds of students, others just a few dozen minors in conditions of severe vulnerability. Neither approach is wrong: the choice shifts between the breadth and the depth of impact.
- Where does the money end up?
Every project has a spending plan. It’s worth looking at how much of the budget becomes work (fees, reimbursements, teaching), how much becomes things (equipment, works, materials), and how much flows back into the proposer’s own circuit.
- What will be left for the city on 1 January 2027?
Some projects leave a lasting asset: a permanent good, an urban installation, an archive, a catalogue, an active service. Others exhaust their effect with the event. This too is a legitimate political choice, but it should be made consciously.
- Is it verifiable?
Projects that state numbers and measurable goals are the ones for which, at year’s end, it will be possible to say with certainty whether they worked.
